  • THE BRIEF
  • When Robert Hill-Smith, proprietor of Yalumba, joined forces with Clare winemaker extraordinaire, Jeffrey Grosset, to create a new Eden Valley Riesling, it was clear that this would be no ordinary wine. Born of occasional musings, the essence of the adventure is two of Australia’s best known Riesling makers working together to elevate the status of both Riesling and Eden Valley.

High on the slopes of Eden Valley, bright yellow and blue bucketssquat between rows of vines. Pickers pedantically divide Riesling grapes row by row – yellow, blue, yellow, blue, yellow, blue. Overseeing the process, tasting the grapes, stand two of Australia’s best known Riesling makers. Clare Valley’s Jeffrey Grosset and Eden Valley’s Robert Hill-Smith work together each vintage before taking their chosen grapes – Jeffrey’s in the blue buckets and Robert’s in the yellow - and parting ways to crush and ferment the fruit at different locations.

Debate follows, as the juice is assessed and the final, final, final blend is agreed upon. Each component, nearly identical at the start, undergoes a different conversion into wine, reflecting the differing philosophies and winemaking practices of the two men.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • A beautifully wet winter set the grape vines up for a healthy start to the growing season. The vines responded quickly to a drier than average spring - growing, flowering and setting a good number of bunches. Summer was warm and dry with lovely cool Eden Valley nights, ripening the grapes and maintaining freshness and natural acidity. The balmy Indian summer of early March helped finish the ripening of these perfectly balanced and flavoured grapes. 2018 will be remembered for high quality Eden Valley Riesling.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

The wine is green and vibrant in appearance, with aromas of zesty lemon and grapefruit. An intense and generous palate, with lively citrus fruit and hints of talc. The wine finishes clean and dry with refreshing, long acidity. As is the case with all great Eden Valley Rieslings, mesh will age gracefully and reliably into a mature wine.

    JAMES SUCKLING

Here’s a riesling in which white peaches are pitted against cherry blossom and chamomile, with a cascade of honeysuckle and pears in the background. Full-bodied and very pithy with some good, crunchy acidity that provides a backbone to the exuberant stone and tropical fruit. Drink now. Screw cap.
