  • THE BRIEF
  • In her 26th vintage, owner / winemaker Stephanie Toole has produced a beautiful and utterly delicious riesling entirely from fruit grown at her Watervale vineyard.

“2018 was a dream run: a low-stress vintage with the fruit ripening evenly following dry seasonal conditions. All very positive except for the lowish yield, which means our 2018’s will sell quickly.”
    Stephanie Toole, winemaker.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • The remote, isolated Mount Horrocks Watervale Riesling vineyard is in the north-eastern corner of this famous Clare Valley subregion, planted on the very edge of the highly prized red loam over limestone. This ACO (Australian Certified Organic) vineyard produces beautifully balanced organic fruit, allowing Stephanie to make her wine without acid additions or the need for fining. The Mount Horrocks Watervale Riesling is not only vegan and vegetarian friendly (as are all her wines), it also has ageing potential, while drinking beautifully now.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Lime green tints to the edge of the glass indicate this wine’s youthful vitality which shows, too, in its aroma which is delicate, floral and also reminiscent of limes. No surprise then that the citrus tones form the base of its taste too, wrapped around a silky mountain stream minerality, juicy, lime blossom spring florals and a long, crisp, cleansing finish. Simply divine. Will repay a decade or more in the cellar, if you possess the restraint.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Mount Horrocks Wines restricts production to approximately 3,500 cases per annum to achieve the highest quality single vineyard wines. All three estate-owned Clare Valley vineyards, totalling ten hectares, are 'A certified' by Australian Certified Organic (ACO). Stephanie carefully crafts essentially hand-made food wines with emphasis on structure as well as generous fruit flavours. Only estate grown grapes are used and these are hand-picked and gently handled under conditions that ensure the varietal and site-specific flavours in the resultant wine, as well as its organic status, are retained. As no finings have been found necessary the wines are all suitable for vegans and vegetarians. Only the finest French oak barriques are used for those wines spending time in barrel.

    TYSON STELZER

Stunning. Unites the concentration and confidence of a dry, low-yielding season with the tension and enduring poise of a long, cool ripening window. It's a precise and glorious union of kaffir lime, granny smith apple and lemon, with the subtle exoticism of guava. With lingering persistence, exacting line, fine limestone minerality and high-tensile acidity, this is one of the greats, with a glorious life before it.

TONI PATERSON MW - THE REAL REVIEW

An elegant and delicate nose with subtle white blossom and scented lime aromatics. The palate has excellent presence and depth of flavour, yet it has a lightness and softness as well. It is a polished wine that is drinking beautifully now though will continue to develop further complexity with age.

A very intense array of fresh limes and more exotic guava-like notes. The palate has great weight and depth with a rich sleeve of citrus and white-peach flavor. Drink or hold.

HUON HOOKE - THE REAL REVIEW

The aromas layer passionfruit over more typical floral notes, while the palate is slightly off-dry and fruity as well as delicate. The finish has good length and a soft ending. It's an accessible style which will also keep well.
