  • THE BRIEF
  • Nick Spencer Wines is a small Canberra based wine company dedicated to producing exceptional, hand crafted wines that honour their local landscape. Producing stunning, award winning wines for nearly two decades, Nick's passion and remarkable talent for considered, quality wines is evident in every bottle.

This Dry Red Blend is Nick's version of the house-blends of yesteryear, when the whole was considered greater than the sum of its parts. Old school charm, with a new wave focus, its a complex and layered wine that definitely over-delivers.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • The Shiraz, Touriga and Tempranillo are grown on the Book Book vineyard and the Cabernet Sauvignon is grown on the Tumblong Vineyard. The Book Book vineyard is located on the western side of the Hume highway just south of Tarcutta. The vines are almost 20 years old and are grown in typically red volcanic soil high in oxidised ironstone. The Tumblong vineyard is located just south of Gundagai town perched above the Murrumbidgee river. The vines were planted in the early 90s and are also grown on deep oxidised iron stone granite soils. All fruit was 100% de-stemmed and fermented separately: The Shiraz was matured in 2500 litre foudres. The Tempranillo matured in stainless steel. The Touriga and Cabernet matured in new French oak puncheons. Shiraz - 58% Touriga - 31% Tempranillo - 6.5% Cabernet Sauvignon - 4.5%

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

The wine has a remarkable lifted floral nose, with bright juicy blue fruits, violets and spice. The palate is bright and crunchy, with long lovely silky tannins.

JAMES HALLIDAY - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

58% shiraz, 31% touriga, 6.5% tempranillo, 4.5% cabernet sauvignon. The colour is deep and clear; spices of all types flutter on the bouquet and palate alike, red fruits and blood plums woven together, the spectacular length fuelled by mouthwatering acidity. This is a truly exceptional wine in conception and execution.

GARY WALSH - THE WINE FRONT

t’s floral and nutty, with a dusting of pepper over blue and purple fruit, and for me, some ouzo/aniseed and a little Play-Doh kind of deal. Medium-bodied, enough fruit, but more to nutty/ferrous in flavour rather than simply fruity. Tannin has a fine chalk dust texture, along with clean and balanced acidity. Some cherry/boysenberry pie with spicy crust in the aftertaste, along with that gentle drag of tannin on good solid finish. A wine of polish and finesse, and an added dimension of interest in its blend of grape varieties. Nice one, Nick.
