  • THE BRIEF
  • O'Leary Walker Wines have been creating small batch, hand-crafted wines from premium Clare Valley vines for decades. With a philosophy of sourcing the best fruit from the best vineyard sites, David O'Leary and Nick Walker have quietly gone about their business of producing distinctive varietal wines, enjoyed by consumers and acclaimed by influential wine critics.

This mutli-award winning vineyard lies in the heart of the Adelaide Hills on Wenzel Rd south-east of Oakbank. David and Sue Cherry (nee O’Leary) planted this site in 1990. The Adelaide Hills is arguably one of the best regions in Australia for Sauvignon Blanc. The soil profile is brown loam with limestone and slate schist, contributing to good drainage and moderate vigour. The elevation of this cool climate region consistently offers a natural balanced acidity to this single vineyard wine.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • Fruit is harvested in the cool of the night. The fruit is de- stemmed and crushed then gently pressed, resulting in a fine free-run cut and a pressings component. These are handled separately. The free-run juice is chilled to preserve the vineyard expression and purity of fruit. Once the juice has settled, it is racked off solids and seeded with yeast. A cool, temperature controlled fermentation is carried out over 10-14 days. The wine is chilled to 5 degrees celsius and filtered prior to bottling.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Pale straw green tints. Lifted tropical fruit aromas highlighted by gooseberry and passionfruit. Textured fruits, nicely balanced with zippy acidity, long clean palate.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • O'Leary Walker Wines was established in 2000 by winemakers David O'Leary and Nick Walker. With over twenty five years experience and established reputations making premium wine with the big companies, these two long time friends decided to take control of their own destiny and craft small batches of wine from some of the best vineyard sites in South Australia. With a great leap of faith they are now doing exactly what they set out to. Based in Leasingham in the Clare Valley, the duo source fruit from all over South Australia (including the Barossa, Adelaide Hills, Coonawarra and McLaren Vale) but some of the best fruit comes from the Clare Valley itself. Of particular note is the Grace's vineyard in Watervale which supplies Riesling for the lauded 'Watervale Riesling' label. Grace's is a dry grown, west facing vineyard that sits on the classic 'red loam over limestone' Watervale soils and produces wonderful Riesling fruit. Similarly, the Smith and Molloy vineyards in the Polish Hill River area also contribute wonderfully intense Riesling fruit of the highest order. The O'Leary Walker range focuses on some premium regional varietals, taking the best bits from all around South Australia. The theory behind this is to draw on the grape varieties that excel in these quite different viticultural climates.

  • HUON HOOKE - THE REAL REVIEW

Palish colour with a restrained, youthful, backwardly fresh aroma, with intense fragrance of attractive fresh herbs and lemon citrus, all nicely harmonised. The wine is dry and refined, intense and focused, taut and graceful, the finish dry but not austere.
