  • WHO MADE IT?
  • From its first production of 141 cases of 1995 Shiraz, Penny's Hill has established a fine reputation for outstanding vineyards from which acclaimed estate wines have emerged. Very much a part of the recent McLaren Vale landscape, the Penny's Hill story commenced in 1988 with the purchase of the original vineyard site. The brand message: "Proudly Australian. More so McLaren Vale."

Winemaker Alexia Roberts consistently produces fine, full-bodied, fruit driven wines using premium estate-grown fruit from some of the best quality vineyards in the region. A meticulous approach every step of the way, from the narrow-planted, low yielding vineyards and throughout the winemaking process, Alexia’s wines deliver the ultimate balance of texture, complexity and interest.

NED GOODWIN - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

Hand-picked, partially whole-bunch fermented (20%) and aged in older neutral French puncheons for 11 months. The ingredients are stacked nicely. Ancient pre-clonal grenache, trained to maximise density and inter-vine competition, to boot. A fine nose, as much about the varietal zip of kirsch, as it is of a herbal cladding. Savoury. Spiderweb tannins are soused in wood smoke, sandalwood and bitter chocolate, expand nicely. The sweetness flowing without too much jam.

HUON HOOKE - THE REAL REVIEW

Deep red/purple colour. Lots of herbs as well as spices to sniff, both dried and fresh herbs. The wine is medium-bodied and soft, with powdery tannins giving good structure and a cleansing, dry finish. Sweet berry core. An interesting, individual set of flavours here. Nice wine.
