  • THE BRIEF
  • Pooley Wines is a five star rated multi award winning Tasmanian family winery located in the heart of the Tasmania’s famous wine producing region, the Coal River Valley.

The 2018 release from the famed Butcher's Hill Vineyard. The wines from Butcher's Hill tend to be a little bigger than their Cooinda Vale counterparts, and this vintage is no exception. Power and drive through the palate, but still possessed of that trademark Pooley finesse. Anna and Matt make a formidable brother/sister team, producing stunning wines from their little corner of the Coal River Valley. Bravo.

  • Butcher's Hill Vineyard - Richmond

SOIL: Dolerite, black cracking clays, limestone over sandstone
    ASPECT: North Facing
    ELEVATION: 30m-100m
    AREA PLANTED: 6ha
VARIETALS: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio, Riesling

Our second vineyard was established on Butchers Hill in 2003. Whilst risk mitigation and a more central position for our cellar door drove the expansion, the addition of a second Single Vineyard site to Pooley Wines has provided depth and diversity with the wines we make.

Belmont House is a stately house, located close to Richmond, built in 1832 by convict labour with sandstone quarried from Butchers Hill. This same stone is found in Richmond Bridge, Australia’s oldest bridge still in use, built in 1823. The soils are well drained dolerite, black cracking clays with limestone faults on sandstone parent material. Soils are high in pH.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Brilliant ruby red in colour. Nose of culinary herbs, dark fruits, cherry cola, rhubarb with lift of lavender. Medium bodied with excellent tannin structure, with power and intensity across the palate. Excellent line, length and balance – will build and develop over the coming decade.

GARY WALSH - THE WINE FRONT

Sweet dark raspberry and black cherry, exotic spices, subtle earthiness, dried roses. Medium-bodied, rich and silky tannin, a little sap and tang, but a core of plump red fruit with a distinct minerally thing going on, and a finish that’s bright and long, with some dried herb and peel seasoning. More perky, less deep this season, but shows the site to good effect.
