Yabby Lake Vineyard was established by the Kirby family in 1998, in Tuerong, which is located in the northern part of the peninsula. Led by winemaker Tom Carson, their philosophy is to craft wines that speak of our site and the season in which they were grown. It’s the attention and care in the vineyard that is most critical to allowing this expression.Yabby Lake's vision and dedication has lead to some exciting accolades in recent years, including our history-making Block 1 Pinot Noir - which was the first pinot noir ever to win the revered Jimmy Watson Trophy, after 52 years of the award.
Handpicked, with each parcel handled separately in the winery. Hand sorted and carefully destemmed (25% whole bunches), each parcel went into traditional open fermenters. The wine underwent three days of cold soaking to ensure even and thorough extraction. Batches were on skins for 7-10 days, after which time they were transferred into French oak (500L puncheons) for 10 months and bottled in December 2018.
Characteristic perfumed, fragrant aromas highlighted by cherry and red berry fruits, complemented by a touch of spice and underlying French oak. The long, silky palate has lovely elegance, a plush, velvety texture and a finely poised finish.
JAMES HALLIDAY - THE AUSTRALIAN
Whole bunch ferments and matured in used French puncheons. If there's a better value entry pinot noir I haven't met up with it. An utterly delicious tapestry of red and purple fruits sewn through a fine web of tannins, the finish long and convincing.
