  • A near perfect growing season produced excellent fruit across all varieties. A cold dry winter followed by a relatively dry summer saw crop levels lower than normal, but the quality of the fruit was high. White and red varieties all performed well, with perfect ripening conditions during harvesting. While crops were down it was still another great vintage with the quality being similar to 2014-2017 vintages.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

The 2018 has many of the same characteristics as previous vintages, and shows that Riesling can still do well in the warm dry years. A classical dry Riesling, with all the lime and fruit characters you would expect, and a crisp and racy finish with a slight touch of sweetness. This wine has the ability to age beautifully.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • The Robert Stein Vineyard and cellar door is located just a short drive from the centre of Mudgee, in the Central West of New South Wales. Robert Stein Vineyard and Winery is one of Mudgee's premier labels, established in 1976 and now in its third generation of expertise. Winemaker Jacob Stein has worked in many regions around the world including Germany, Italy, Canada and Margaret River in Western Australia. His experience abroad has brought wealth of new technique and theories and is working well to maintain the traditions and quality of all wines made at Robert Stein. Robert Stein produces a wide range of single vineyard wines, made solely from their 70 acre vineyard. The exposure of the brand and quality of wines has rapidly increased, with Jacob Stein at the Helm. Jacob was awarded the Gourmet Traveller Young Winemaker of the Year award in 2012, further proof of his achievements in Mudgee. Robert Stein Winery has also been consecutively awarded a James Halliday 5 star winery in The Wine Companion since 2010.

TONI PATERSON MW - THE REAL REVIEW

A pure, fragrant riesling with excellent aromatic appeal. Ripe lemon, lime zest and a little green apple. The palate is intense and long with a fine core of acidity. A great drink in its youth though it will evolve more depth and complexity with time in the cellar.

JANE FAULKNER - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

It's intense and detailed and like a thoroughbred just wants to bolt at lightning speed. It's the acidity that does that. Then it backs off, revealing some blossom, wet stone and lime juice. It's energising. Tight now, delicious, but will unfurl more in good time.

    STEVE LESZCZYNSKI - QWINE

Oh wow. We have a live one here. Sizzling Riesling dancing on point. Great Riesling is not supposed to come from Mudgee, right? The gang at Robert Stein have put that preconception to the side and have forged a fabulous reputation for this variety. A myriad of awards seem to follow this wine around, and it’s not hard to see why. A polished gem, whiffs of tonic, Jasmine flowers and bath salts accelerate on opening before waves of citrus fruit and beautifully balanced acidity make this an absolutely delicious wine. Add talc feels to a long and moreish finish and your want for refreshment is quickly cured. Brilliant stuff.

    HUON HOOKE

Light straw colour with an intense dried flower and green lime aroma, the palate dry and lean and restrained, a bit straightforward at this stage but promising to do more in time. A tight, unevolved youngster. This needs time and will be very good.

CAMPBELL MATTINSON - THE WINE FRONT

Dry, straight and long. Citrussy flavours comb cleanly and well through a long palate. Slatey finish is appropriate icing to an impressive show. Riesling in a good place. Now or later.
