Chardonnay here is the star performer, with Matt East's Rouleur label delivering a scintillating example from an Upper Yarra (Woori Yallock) parcel of fruit.
Tastefully modern, this wine retains vibrancy and freshness, eschewing new-oak in favour of old puncheons and hogsheads. Peach, cut-hay and oatmeal, warm rice-pudding and lemon barley all encroach around a zesty core of acidity and lemon cream on the palate.
"Vintage 2018 presented some wonderful parcels of fruit, and Chardonnay was certainly a quality performer.
This year we sourced Chardonnay from a single Upper Yarra vineyard near the township of Woori Yallock. Taking 2 clones (Bernard 76 and P58) from separate blocks on the property, we treated each (clonal) parcel individually at the press.
The lower, westerly facing P58 block was exceptional – with perfectly formed and flavored berries, this fruit was first pressed and run full solids to new (15%), 1, 2 and 3YO puncheons.
The remaining 50% was clone 76, a more elevated but exposed block, carrying lower yield. We gently pressed this fruit to tank, settled the juice for 48 hours before running to old puncheons and hogsheads for fermentation. Primary ferment occurred naturally in barrel and MLF was avoided to retain vibrancy and style. All barrels were lightly sulfured and the wine remained on gross lees for the entire 9 months maturation. Batonnage was kept to a minimum as we felt the wine had ample layers and complexity.
In late November 2018, our Chardonnay was racked, settled and bentonite fined in tank before being lightly filtered and bottled."
Winemaker & Founder - Matt East
Aromatics of white peach, lemon barley, almond meal and spice. The palate has a tangy grapefruit line, backed by intense yellow fruits, curd and fine supporting oak
Matt East grew up in the Yarra Valley and worked in the family vineyard from a young age. After nearly 20 years in the wine industry, East set about creating his own wine brand which was based on a promise to his late father some years earlier. Rouleur (roller) was inspired by long rides in the Yarra Valley, where he grew up and his adopted home in McLaren Vale, where he recently worked. Exploring both regions by bike helped East source quality fruit and vineyards in both the Yarra Valley and McLaren Vale. Starting with Pinot Noir from the family’s original Coldstream vineyard, East and winemaker Rob Hall collaborate on three additional wines under the Rouleur label – Chardonnay from the Upper Yarra Valley together with a Grenache and Shiraz both from elevated Blewitt Springs vineyards in McLaren Vale.
CAMPBELL MATTINSON - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION
From Woori Yallock in the Upper Yarra. 350 dozen made. Pitch perfect in all respects. Fruit and oak are balanced on a pinhead; the finish feels assured; it's safely well ripened and it simply tastes good. It gathers pace as it reaches the finish, always a good sign.
