  • WHO MADE IT?
  • THE BRIEF
  • Ottelia is the project of winemaking veteran John Innes, who spent over twenty years as the winemaker at Rymill in the Coonwarra.

While Ottelia is based in the Coonawarra, John's time as a winemaking consultant to many of the smaller wineries of Mount Gambier and the limestone coast, helped him unearth some pretty impressive fruit sources over the years. John's expertise is based in one key winemaking philosophy, that everything happens in the vineyard, and it is the key to making great wines. All the vineyards utilised for the Ottelia range of wines are sustainably farmed, and adhere to fundamental principals of organics and low input.

The 2017 Pinot Gris is a blend of fruit sourced from two regions within the Limestone Coast creating a medium bodied Pinot Gris with excellent structure and appeal.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • The Robe wine region is within The Limestone Coast zone,100 Kms due west of Coonawarra. Robe has developed it’s own style of delicate, cool climate, maritime influenced wines which have recieved critical acclaim by wine professionals and are beginning to gain consumer awareness. Proximity to the Southern Ocean and the shallow terra rossa soils combine to providing an excellent viticultural environment. The 2018 vintage was outstanding across all regions of the Limestone Coast. Ideal growing and ripening conditions ensured optimal flavour and ripeness at harvest

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Enticing, lifted aromas of spice, apple, nashi pear and cumquat zest. Generous and flavoursome combination of apple, pear and lychee all contribute to the classic textural qualities of the Gris style.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Prior to establishing Ottelia John served a 30‐year apprenticeship in wine making. It started as a 17 year old growing up in Bathurst, NSW. Despite not having a strong connection to wine making, though his parents were known to bottle their own Mudgee red on occasion, he knew he wanted to be a winemaker. A few years and a few detours later, he was studying Wine Science and working as an assistant to the esteemed Italian wine maker Carlo Corino, considered one of the best in the game. A move to Coonawarra followed where John worked as a winemaker for 20 vintages, and then as a winemaking consultant. He knows the Limestone Coast well, its wine growing regions of Coonawarra, Wrattonbully, Mount Benson and Mount Gambier, their different soils, their climates. That’s the background, the knowledge and the enthusiasm John brings to Ottelia.
