Owen Inglis and his wife Cassandra first opened Sidewood in 2004. Their mission: ‘to create beautifully balanced, elegant wines with a sense of place. Wines that are delicious on the palate and also reflect the soil, the climate, and lifestyle of the Adelaide Hills.’
Since then they have brought on highly talented winemaker Darryl Catlin (formerly Chief Winemaker for Shaw and Smith) and expanded their property to include four stellar cool-climate Adelaide Hills sites. Those that lend themselves to the balance and elegance to which the label aspires.
The 2018 Sidewood Chardonnay is from their Estate Range. The grapes are sourced mostly from their Mappinga Road Vineyard. The winemaking is minimalist, intelligent, and gentle. They use free-run juice and barrel ferments with wild yeast. Before leaving the wine to mature for ten months. The process is concluded with rigorous barrel selection for the final blend. The attention to detail and uncompromising commitment to quality that is at the very heart of this label is most obvious when you consider this is just their entry-level range.
The results speak for themselves, this is an elegant, pristine Chardonnay with soft oak spice and lashings of grapefruit and white flowers. It is possibly one of the best at this price point in the entire country. Like we said, this wine is a Unicorn, we don’t see them very often. So don’t miss out.
Individually selected parcels were picked from the Chardonnay blocks at our Mappinga Road vineyard primarily I10V1 with a proportion of B95 and B76 clones. Gently pressed, the free-run juice was then barrel fermented using wild yeast in 100% French oak. The wine was left to mature for ten months before rigorous barrel selection. Extraction rate at 600 L per mt.
The wine has tantalising aromas of jasmine and ripe lemon with a round, velvety structure. The palate showcases crisp, mouth-watering flavours of grapefruit, apricot and white peach, finishing with a lingering, crisp minerality.Serve chilled on its own or enjoy as an accompaniment to teriyaki salmon, roast pork or a mushroom risotto. Drinking beautifully now but will continue to evolve with careful cellaring.
Owners and Vignerons, Owen and Cassandra Inglis founded Sidewood in 2004 with a passion to create beautifully balanced and elegant award winning wines of the highest quality. Though their history is short, Sidewood has achieved five red-star accreditation from James Halliday and in 2016 became the largest eco sustainable winery in the Adelaide Hills. Sidewood now encompasses four individual vineyards in Oakbank, Echunga, Nairne and Verdun. The original 300 acre Oakbank vineyard is situated in the Onkaparinga Valley, 380m above sea level. Climate, soil type, an unwavering focus on excellence in viticulture combined with hand-picking and fruit selection play a vital role to ensure that only the best fruit is grown and used for Sidewood Wines. Sidewood Wines are made by internationally acclaimed Winemaker, Darryl Catlin at Sidewood’s state of the art winery at Nairne in the Adelaide Hills.
