  • THE BRIEF
  • An interesting twist on the old classic.

Great Southern Riesling is renowned for being finely structured, elegant and long-lived. But far more in the mineral, almost saline spectrum, than say, the Clare Valley.

The Snake + Herring guys have reinterpreted what Great Southern Riesling can be with their 2018 'Sabotage.' It's made up of a combo of 53% free run juice, and 47% barrel fermented pressings. Essentially, they've beefed up the typical lean, tight fruit of the free-run, with texture and richness from the barrel components. Crazy, but it really works.

The result is a wine that shows fresh lime juice, quartz-like minerality, and some lemon drop brightness. Lovely texture and drive on the palate, whipped clean on the finish by a natural bracing acidity. Good stuff.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • We have utilized Riesling from 2 vineyards for this wine; one in Porongurup (the coolest of the subregions) and the other in the Frankland River subregion, the most continental of the subregions. The blend resulted in 80% Porongurup and 20% Frankland Riesling. The Porongurup component is separated into free run and pressings fractions. The free run component is settled and the fermented in tank. The pressings are run direct to barrel and natural fermentation takes place. The Frankland component is 100% pressings and also wild fermented in barrel. The final blend is 53% free run and 47% barrel fermented pressings. The free run component is all about lean tight fruit and length; the barrel ferment components add texture and richness.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Lime juice, wet quartz and some candied lemon characters are followed by preserved lemon and a herbal nuance on the palate. There is real texture on the palate from the barrel ferment and great drive through the finish with a lingering clean citrus acidity. A wine of great balance and complexity.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • The Snake + Herring brand is a wine safari searching for remarkable grapes from West Australian Vineyards. The Search has begun, and our grape balloon manned by Snake (our winemaker) and Herring (our navigator) represent this. The southwest of WA is a viticultural treasure map as there are vineyard jewels scattered throughout. We seek for blocks within vineyards that really shine; they may seem dull when diluted by the bordering lesser dirt. The search is to find and polish these often overlooked gems and present a treasure chest of different jewels: pristine, crystalline Rieslings; crisp, radiant, multi-faceted Chardonnays; alluring, perfumed Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon; dark, exotic, hedonistic Shiraz; brilliant, regal displays of Cabernets and blends.

A rather interesting expression of riesling from the Great Southern. It's a combo of free-run juice and then pressings which have been wild-fermented in barrel. Has a limey spiciness that really gives the lips a decent smacking. Long and flavoursome. Mighty impressive alternative riesling style.

HUON HOOKE - THE REAL REVIEW

Very light yellow colour; youthful, and the aroma is floral and dry straw-like. The wine is very restrained, delicate, dry and light-bodied, but not austere. The finish is dry and it has quite firm lemony acidity; tense, taut and bracing.
