The Vanguardist range represents the epitome of what we are about. Pushing the realms of standard winemaking to deliver intrigue, excitement and utmost quality, without any loss of sense of place. Ultimate dedication to the craft of viticulture and winemaking, encapsulated in a bottle – through our lens.
The Grenache that produces this wine comes from an outstanding spot in Blewitt Springs. A hidden gem of sorts, the high ‘Silver Sands’ vineyard was planted by Robert Rende and his father some 48 years ago. The summer of 2018 was brutal, due to several above 40-degree days which stressed even our dry grown goblet vines. We saw an excellent quality of Grenache across several different hand picks come into the winery, albeit a lowly yield of around 20HL/Ha, which is 40% below the long-term average. The final wine sees around 40% whole bunch, some carbonic, some more traditional.
A mixture of newer and older puncheons housed the wine for about ten months post-press, before the final wine was blended by gravity and bottled without fining or filtration.
Vanguardist Wines is, in it's heart, a collaborative project between three friends, each from varying walks of life, that came to the realisation (after many a late evening in the sleepy town of Hawkes Bay, New Zealand) that they held the same ideals about wine. We all have jobs and take time outside of our everyday lives so that we have our own creative licence to produce wines that we love to drink.
‘An experimental spirit at heart’
Driven by a passion for creating wines with intrigue, 'V' is about pushing the boundaries of ‘status quo’ wine making and viticulture. Wines that are delicious, textural and enticing.
In an industry that is awash with overly commercialised wines produced by corporates who take up all the elbow room, shout noisily across the table and flood the market with mass produced wine that are often guised as ‘boutique wines’, we wish to make a humble stand and be vanguardist in our methods.
'V' is a nod to the small guys looking to keep it real, forever striving to unlock the imagination and inspire those with curious palates.
GARY WALSH - THE WINE FRONT
Cloth label. Hand sorted cork. Blewitt Springs. Made my Michael Corbett, who’s an all round choice bro. Rich ripe raspberry, baking spices, musk and roses, subtle earthiness. Cool, clean, rich in red fruit, but keeps itself neat and tidy, sage and cinnamon spiced nuts, beautiful sweep of ripe pixelated tannin, pure acidity, very long with raspberry and perfume trailing, and more of that graphite tannin cleaning up the finish. Outstanding. 95.5/100
