  • 'An Australian Grand Cru'
    Huon Hooke

Heytesbury Chard, one of Australia's and the world's best examples of this wine. Full Stop. And in 2018 you will find it hard to get any better than this. Made from a selection of the most unique and striking rows of fruit from the Vasse empire, this tightly wound wine will strike you with its complexity and character. Entrenched with grain, meal and almond, you will find the beautiful twists of lemon, peel and honey-dew melon opening up in the glass. This is a region and a vintage where winemakers like Virginia Wilcox thrive.

The long extended ripening of 2018 meant her thoroughly careful and modern take on Margaret River Gin Gin clone Chardonnay has shined right through. While malolactic is encouraged in the wine, it is a dominant feature, and nor is the oak, only used in the perfect ratio to ensure the fruit sucks up the wood character, rather than be dominated by it.

While its a little restrained now, this vintage will shine in a few years time. Do what you must to get your hands on a bottle of this vintage of Heytesbury, arguably the finest ever release put together by Vasse Felix.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • Our most unique small vineyard sections where clone, aspect and soil interplay in such a way to ignite stunning varietal and wild yeast characters. Another cool season for Chardonnay, picked slightly later than 2017 and showing more fruit weight and ideal sugar levels. With moderate to high acidity, just over half completed malolactic fermentation. Beautifully ripe skins created a softer Heytesbury in this vintage. Hand-harvested, whole-bunches were pressed and transferred direct to barrel as unclarified juice. The wine was fermented with only natural yeasts from the vineyard and it remained in barrel for 9 months with some battonage. Fruit was 100% Gingin clone. A beautifully rich vintage for Chardonnay where the wines are looking approachable quite early yet will integrate and become deeper with time.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Pale straw with a green tinge. An enticing, complex array of citrus, lemon/lime rind and pith, with light pineapple and sweet pie crust. Inviting savoury complexities of mushroom, ocean and flinty fire cracker complete the elegant perfume. A fleshy entrance with lovely weight and richness is supported by the structure of classic Heytesbury acid and pithy firmness. An almost cuddly core reveals beautiful lemon sponge characters, then finishes dry with hints of fresh sage and stone flint.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Vasse Felix was the first vineyard and winery to be established in Western Australia’s Margaret River region. Established in 1967 by Dr Tom Cullity, it is situated in the Willyabrup sub region where ancient soils and cooling Southern and Indian Ocean breezes provide ideal conditions for fine wine production. Vasse Felix is owned and operated by the Holmes a Court family. The Vasse Felix winemaking team shares a common goal in crafting wines of exceptional quality from unique vineyard sites. Under the direction of Chief Winemaker Virginia Willcock, the objective remains the same today as it did 40 years ago. A precise understanding of local viticulture and environment is coupled with a hands on winemaking approach. The Vasse Felix style shows concentration and complexity while retaining signature elegance and finesse. It is a testament to winemaking and viticultural dedication and attention to detail throughout the year. The revered Vasse Felix Heytesbury wines are produced in limited quantities from a barrel selection of the finest fruit parcels each vintage. Vasse Felix continues to be one of the most highly awarded and visited wineries in Australia.

JANE FAULKNER - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

Heytesbury has always been a yin and yang wine. It has power, structure and depth yet can appear reticent in its youth. The fruit is fabulous. Wafts of lemon balm, ginger cream and spicy oak too but it is all about the palate - linear, long, super fine, a tight acid line, it has a crushed rock character with moreish flinty sulphides - the list goes on. Everything in sync. It's one heck of a classy chardonnay.
