  • THE BRIEF
  • One of the most consistent star-performers in Australian white wine, the latest incarnation of the Duke's Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling, made by the hyper-talented Riesling maestro Rob Diletti, is as on-point as ever. Intensity the by-word for this vintage, with a purity of the fruit, driven by cut-hay, lime peel, green foliage, coriander and sweet white flower pollen.

With a run of points something akin to Penfolds Grange, and a win for the Halliday Wine of the Year, it is a Riesling that is fast becoming one of the most collected wines in the country. While the release has only been out for a short while yet, it's already notched up a Double Gold Medal at the Six Nations Wine Show. Expect greatness.

Another beautiful wine after a long line of other wonderful Duke's rieslings. A touch more fruit intensity. Crisp, dry, clean, lime. Cellar for 20 years.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • When Hilde and Ian (Duke) Ranson sold their clothing manufacturing business in 1998, they were able to fulfil a long-held dream of establishing a vineyard in the Porongurup subregion of Great Southern with the acquisition of a 65ha farm at the foot of the Porongurup Range. They planted shiraz and cabernet sauvignon (3ha each) and riesling (4ha). Hilde, a successful artist, designed the beautiful, scalloped, glasswalled cellar door sales area, with its mountain blue cladding. The appointment of Rob Diletti as winemaker will, if it were possible, increase the quality of the wines.
