  • THE BRIEF
  • Grenache from McLaren Vale has often been overshadowed by Shiraz and even Cabernet Sauvignon, but in the last decade it has become more and more clear that Grenache is the gem of the vale. The old bush vines, grown without irrigation, that are in their prime for making great Grenache are among the viticultural treasures of Australia.

The Other Wine Co. wines are entirely vinified and bottled at Shaw + Smith in Balhannah. The wines are “other” partly because they give the winemakers a chance to play with varieties and regions that don’t fit into Shaw + Smith. They are also an “other” perspective from so many wines that favour over-ripeness and oak instead of freshness and balance, and power over drinkability. These are made to drink and enjoy.

  • WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Fresh, vibrant and spicy. Super fresh and intense raspberries, rhubarb, sage and violets; all packed into a medium bodied wine.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • The Other Wine Co. is a new venture that aims to make wines from the right grape, grown in the right place. That may sound obvious, but it's a principal honoured more "in the breach than the observance." Really good matches of variety and place take a long time to become established, but when they do, the proof is in the glass. The Other Wine Co. wines are entirely vinified and bottled at Shaw + Smith in Balhannah. The wines are "other" partly because they give the winemakers a chance to lay with varieties and regions that don't fit into Shaw + Smith. They are also an "other" perspective from so many wines that favour over-ripeness and oak instead of freshness and balance, and power over drinkability. These are made to drink and enjoy. That's it!

CAMPBELL MATTINSON - THE WINE FRONT

Like the wine, don't mind the packaging, like the price. This is more-ish. The fruit is sweet but it's surrounded by savouriness. Raspberry and/or redcurrant flavours swing into woodsy herbs. There's finesse to the tannin. Both the wine's freshness and mouthfeel are in a good place. Ticks all around.

NED GOODWIN - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

Hand-picked across parcels, some less ripe than others. The result is certainly fresh, but lacking the pulpy, hedonistic prerequisite joy of grenache. Gently reductive with a whiff of orange rind, tomatillo and sour cherry to raspberry scents, careening along a beam of herbal acidity and gently bunchy (10% cluster) tannins, palpable just enough.
