  • WHO MADE IT?
  • The Other Wine Co. is a new venture that aims to make wines from the right grape, grown in the right place. That may sound obvious, but it's a principal honoured more "in the breach than the observance." Really good matches of variety and place take a long time to become established, but when they do, the proof is in the glass. The Other Wine Co. wines are entirely vinified and bottled at Shaw + Smith in Balhannah. The wines are "other" partly because they give the winemakers a chance to lay with varieties and regions that don't fit into Shaw + Smith. They are also an "other" perspective from so many wines that favour over-ripeness and oak instead of freshness and balance, and power over drinkability. These are made to drink and enjoy. That's it!

NED GOODWIN - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

It is rewarding that this archetypal Aussie blend is seeing a resurgence. After all, some of the country's very finest wines came from this paradigm. A blend of Adelaide Hills (shiraz) and Tasmanian fruit. This is delicious. Surely a whole berry/cluster ferment. Partial carbonic influence having sway across a pulpy and juicy mid-weighted frame, gentle tannins and a spurt of acidity. Otherwise, violet and ripe cherry. A whiff of reductive tension.

    HUON HOOKE

(Adelaide Hills and Tasmania) Medium to full red/purple colour. The bouquet shows peppery graphite spices, raspberry and cherry. The wine is medium-bodied at most, with a gentle tannin grip. It's a very good, fresh, shiraz-driven blend, which is approachable young and will also hold on for a few years.

MIKE BENNIE - THE WINE FRONT

Shiraz and pinot noir from Adelaide Hills and Tasmania. Not to be confused with The Other Right, also an Adelaide Hills-based wine producer, The Other Wine Co is the baby blue-labelled, Shaw & Smith gestated wine project. About half way through my time at my high school some colour psychologist (it's a thing) consulted my public high school with a suggestion to pacify students it would be prudent to repaint the white walls (adorned with a million scuff marks from kids kicking the walls with their black school shoes, or, more amusingly, taking them off and jumping up as high as possible to scuff the walls) so badly slashed with black marks that it resembled flattened zebra pelts on the walls. The colour psychologist had painters come and paint the walls the very same blue as these labels. Within days the marks returned, and grew in number, that blue though. This is an ok wine, it feels like a nice, generic red, diffuse and painted in water colour up front, a touch green, then a late-notice build of gummy tannin finishes the wine. Perfume is great, red cherry, apples, pepper, choc mint; flavours, though light, show cherry, cranberry and some sweet jellied raspberry character with a little spice. It's a nice wine, the tannins to finish feel pretty goo(more...)
