  • Timo Mayer is well known for  really not giving a toss about your expectations. The inaugural vintage of his 100% whole bunch Merlot is the latest experiment in his portfolio that has us all intrigued and slightly nervous. 
    Is it going to pay off? Who knows.

    What we do know is that not long ago critics were rolling their eyes at his weird and wacky winemaking methods. Now he is one of the regions cult producers and every die hard cork-dork is on the edge of their seat waiting to see what he'll do next. Funky Yarra Valley Merlot is unlikely to be the next Chateau Petrus, but we doubt Timo would want that anyway! If history is anything to go by these wines will sell out fast, don't miss out on being one of the first people ever to try what is sure to be another home run for Timo Mayer.

    Bring back the funk! The well-known war cry of German-born winemaker Timo Mayer that sums up his wines pretty succinctly. Since 2002 Timo has been making wines on the affectionately named 'Bloody Hill' (it's bloody steep) in the Yarra Valley and in that short time he has managed to earn himself a stellar reputation. His willingness to try new things and his disregard for the 'done thing' created a bit of a stir when he first came on the scene, however the extraordinary wines he is producing year after year have converted even the most sceptical of wine critics.

    His use of carbonic maceration and whole bunch fermentation, paired with his belief in little fining and filtration have created a really distinctive and recognisable wine style. Beyond the 'Hill', Timo makes a range of wines (in minuscule quantities) from some of great single sites across the Yarra Valley. He will often refer to himself as 'just a farmer', whats there in the vineyard is what you get in the glass.

    Timo's approach, like the man himself is a little wild and eccentric. He doesn't do tasting notes or back labels, he just wants you to give his wines a crack, because what's in the bottle is going to convince you, all on its own.

    MIKE BENNIE - THE WINE FRONT


    This is 100% whole bunch merlot, which of course is a world first or something. Timo, Timo, Timo. Like Beetlejuice, say it three times over this bottle and it summons him cackling and shouting and swearing. Stemsy whiffs of green herb, white pepper, mescal, smoke, amazing stalk characters here but I am so compelled, because, merlot. Quite dark fruit flavours but seriously striking herbal, fennel, white peppery overlay? you’ll have to love stalks, for sure. Lots of structure,, chewiness, powdery tannin and brisk acidity. Wicked mouthfuls here. So into it.
