2018 Brave Souls The Lighthouse Keeper Riesling

2018 Brave Souls The Lighthouse Keeper Riesling

From vineyards across the Eden Valley, night-harvested, destemmed, chilled, pressed to tank for fermentation at 15 degrees C. Pale straw-green; the aromatic bouquet picks up citrus blossom on the first whiff, the palate seamlessly running with lime/lemon flavours along silvery lines of acidity. A very good example of a very good vintage.

DESCRIPTION
  • One of Ten Best New Wineries from James Halliday's Wine Companion 2019, Brave Souls is the creation of young winemaker Julia Weirich, in collaboration with Simon Cowham and Corey Ryan of Sons of Eden. The name is inspired by the story of the famous Admella shipwreck of 1859 and spotlights the remarkable accounts of those characters who risked their lives to help the survivors. Iconic Australian artist Bruce Goold generously agreed to visualise the tales of these Brave Souls for the project’s labels.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

Grapes are sourced from different vineyards located in the Eden Valley. Aspect and challenging microclimates help to create fine zesty mouthfeel and retain natural acidity. The predominantly sandy loam soils contribute to low yields and intense citrus and floral characters. In 2017 a cool Spring followed a wet Winter, leading to a late budburst. As a result the vines required no supplementary irrigation during the entire season and developed ample canopy and average yields. With no major heat spikes during the ripening season the harvest dates were late, meaning the fruit slowly developed delicate Riesling flavours while retaining natural acidity. A near perfect season for the production of benchmark Eden Valley Riesling.

Harvested in the cool of the night to small 0.5t bins the fruit was fully destemmed, lightly pressed and chilled within the fermenter to ensure an extended fermentation period. Careful fermentation management ensured the temperature did not exceed 15C in order to retain the delicate Riesling characters. Upon dryness the wine was left for 2 months on yeast lees before being prepared for bottling.

    TASTING NOTES
The colour of the wine is best described as pale straw with green hues. Vibrant aromas of lemon and lime citrus fruit accompanied with complex hints of sweet lemon blossom. Pronounced citrus notes supported with an enduring but well balanced mineral line, extending the length of the palate. This wine concludes with a long and fine dry finish.

'Light, bright yellow colour. Dried flowers and dried herbs to sniff, very Eden Valley; the palate has some richness and breadth as well as refinement and subtlety. A nice mixture of attributes. Delicious fruit depth and generosity, at the same time crisp and fresh and youthfully bright, with a future ahead of it. Appetising dry finish. '
