DESCRIPTION
  • Sometime around 2004, the founder of Ilegal Mezcal, John Rexer, was bringing unbranded (and illegal) Mezcal from Oaxaca to supply his bar in Guatemala. It was of such good quality that it soon gained in popularity, and in 2006 he created the Ilegal brand.

From his slightly nefarious beginnings as a smuggler, John Rexer has grown the brand into a global (and far more legal) celebration of this often overlooked Mexican distillate. He still also runs the bar in Guatemala.

The Joven Mezcal is the unaged, and therefore most pure, form from the Ilegal portfolio. Full-bodied, with a light smokiness and lingering spice. Ideal for cocktails, or perfect on its own.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

100% Espadin agave. Roasted in traditional earthen pits for 5-7 days. Milled and crushed by horse-powered tahona (mill). Fermentation for 7-10 days, before distillation.

    TASTING NOTES

Eucalyptus and mineral aromas compliment hints of green apple, fresh citrus, and red chiltepe. Full bodied agave flavor. Light smoke, lingering heat. Ideal for cocktails or perfect on its own.

  • REVIEWS

'This smooth, well-balanced mezcal seems unremarkable at first, but has a certain addictiveness. The clear color and sweet, vegetal, slightly smoky fragrance seems pleasant but ordinary. But the alluring honeyed pepper notes and silky mouthfeel bring you back for more.'
88 Points - Kara Newman, Wine Enthusiast Magazine

'This mezcal truly tastes of the earth and sun, with strong vegetal notes of green bell pepper, chili pepper, sweet pepper flavors set against sunnier tropical fruits like pineapple, grapefruit and blood orange. The smoke is deep and almost peaty tasting, like a cigar. A gentle burn guides it out into the finish.'
