  • THE BRIEF
  • Niepoort has been an independent family business since 1842. Through five generation the business has passed from one Niepoort to the next and in most cases the older and younger generations worked side by side for a long period. The fifth generation, Eduard Dirk Niepoort is now head of the business, and producing some spectacular Port wines.

The beautiful thing about vintage Port is the way that it changes and develops over the years. As a youthful wine, it's all power and structure, with youthful fruit characters. In its middle-age (about 20-25 years old), the effects of spirit maturation and integration are revealed, with wonderfully delicate aged wine characters, framed by stunningly fine tannins. Its retirement years (anywhere from 30 years and up, depending on the wine) show a fine, and mature spirit character, with poise and grace. Vintage Port is enjoyable through all phases, depending on your personal preference.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • Following a hot dry summer, grapes were in good condition at the time of harvest, if somewhat on the ripe side. Some dense coloured wines were made in "lagares" by foot treading, only a few Vintage declarations were made in 1987, one of them being Niepoort. The wine, now with nearly 20 years age, exhibits wonderful bottle age character, characteristic of a fine Vintage Port.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Dark and youthful in colour for its age, now showing wonderful bottle age aroma on the nose, interspersed with a soft mint character. On the palate, the Vintage 1987 is very fine, shows good richness and a long finish.
