This is the first Blanc de Noirs in the house’s history. Initially created as an experiment, Grand Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut NV is based on the 2007 vintage and was created by Chef de Cave, Odilon de Varine, using some of his favourite crus. The blend includes the Grand Crus of Ambonnay, Aÿ, Verzy and Premier Crus of Chigny les Roses, Tauxières, Avenay and aged for nine years on lees before disgorgement.
Grand Blanc de Noirs is a golden yellow with deep gold flecks. It is translucent and bright, accompanied by a string of extremely fine bubbles. The nose unveils complex and harmonious aromas, reminiscent of white stone fruits along with hints of patisserie. As it unfurls on the palate, it beautifully displays notes of beeswax and candied citron. The attack is supple and well-balanced. The finish is crisp and fresh with salty, almost iodine, notes, along with a certain minerality and structure. Perfectly balanced between intense aromas and elegant finesse. The fruity structure of the Pinot Noir is expressed with surprising freshness and precision.
Founded in Aÿ in 1584 by Pierre Gosset, Gosset is the oldest wine house in Champagne. It also remains one of the most prestigious, considered by many collectors and connoisseurs as the world’s preeminent name in luxury champagne. In 2009, this storied winemaker celebrated a landmark 425-year anniversary.
Gosset's reputation for excellence starts on the vines. Its champagnes are composed almost entirely of grapes from Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards. Unlike most champagne producers, this illustrious wine house purposely avoids malolactic fermentation and always performs riddling and disgorging of prestige cuvées and large-format bottles by hand. Gosset champagnes are made with infinite care and kept in dark cellars for at least three years – and up to five for vintage and prestige cuvées – before release.
Gosset's inimitable style – powerful and full-bodied, of unrivalled richness and staying power – has changed little over the centuries. Once a favourite of the kings and queens of France, it is now a fixture on the wine lists of some of the most lauded restaurants in the world, recognised by expert sommeliers for its exceptional capacity to enhance a wide range of cuisine.
This one-off wine has a complex, slightly mushroomy pinot bouquet, and is very intense, fine and dry in the mouth. A superb, refreshing wine with a beautifully clean finish. (2007 base, with 9 years on lees; 100% pinot noir from Montagne de Reims. 5 grams/litre dosage; only 10, 000 bottles produced).
STEPHAN REINHARDT - WINE ADVOCATE
Exclusively made from Pinot Noir cultivated in Ambonnay, Aÿ, Verzy, Chigny-les-Roses and Tauxières, the intensely white-golden colored NV Grand Blanc de Noirs Extra-Brut is deep, intense and rich on the toasty and vinous nose. Full-bodied, round and pure, this is a generous, highly elegant, precise, finessed, fresh and stimulatingly salty cuvée with structure, grip and persistent vinous character. It has very nice reduction and piercing minerality. Tasted in August 2018 from lot L7168111 with a dosage of five gramps per liter.
