Made from Grenache and Macabeu, with a residual-sugar level of 90grams, this decadent elixir is the perfect foil for Dark Chocolate, or rich deserts. Like tawny port, its dense, with fruitcake, fig, cocoa and malt. Brilliant stuff.

  • Mas Amiel is a vineyard just outside the village of Maury, North-East of Perpignan. Planted predominantly with Grenache, the estate is best know for the production of its Vin Doux Naturel, Maury, a sweet 'oxidised' wine which is aged outdoors in large glass demi-johns before being transferred into large oak barrels to age.

    Similar to the other local wine of fame, Banyuls and Rivesaltes, this is a decadent, lavish tawny like drink with residual sugar, raisins, walnut, rancio, cacao and fruitcake flavours. Regarded as one of the great dessert wines of the world, it is impeccable with chocolate.


    Made in the classical Mas Amiel manner, 'muté sur grain', aged a year in 'bon-bons' (prodigiously large glass jars which are left out in the sun and snow on the foothills of the Pyrenees) for a year, then aged in wood (large 'foudres') until bottling when ready for release. 90% Grenache, 5% each Carignan and Macabeu. Vaguely reminiscent of a tawny Port in a style all its own.


    It exhales strong aromas of cocoa, prunes and walnuts, the latter of which is characteristic of very old fortified wines. The palate is suave and refined.


    'This medium-bodied, extroverted wine can be consumed as an apéritif or in lieu of dessert over the next 10 years. Interestingly, the 15 Ans d'Âge Prestige contains the same amount of residual sugar as its 10-year-old sibling, yet comes across as totally dry. It reveals intense candied nut aromas and flavours reminiscent of sweet cigar tobacco, cedar, and hazelnuts. It is medium-bodied, has outstanding balance, as well as a silky-textured personality. Drink it over the next 10 years.'

    'The Mas Amiel Maury 15 Ans d'Age L439 - bottled in February - mingles chocolate syrup and cocoa powder with nutmeg, praline, and dried cherry. This displays the soothing polish missed by the 10-year, yet it reveals a remarkable degree of freshness and invigoration thanks to high-toned inner-mouth volatile esters that convey lift and acidity, as well as to persistent berry skin tartness. The uncanny juxtaposition of oxidative and fresh elements here is at the heat of its appeal. This would be an excellent batch of Mas Amiel 15-year to look for and cellar, not that it will improve (nor will it decay) in bottle, but because it is a particularly successful blend.'
