NV Primo Estate Joseph Sparkling Red

NV Primo Estate Joseph Sparkling Red

'It’s quite powerful in its way too, lots of concentration, but feels bound up, drawn long, medium weight, near on elegant if it wasn’t for the flirty, vivacious nature of the wine. So much going on and so delicious.'

  • What do the winemakers in industry professionals drink for Christmas? Jospeh Sparkling Red.

It is the standard bearer for the style in Australia, and has such a cult following, that it would have to be the ONLY sparkling red that is allocated anywhere in the world.

This is the latest disgorgement, July 2018, and will be the perfect fit to end the year off. Made from a solera of fruit that goes in Moda, and liquered with some of the great Australian aged fortified wines to find the right sweet/tart balance. Exceptional wine this latest release.

  • To create the Joseph Sparkling Red a hogshead of the ultra premium Moda Cabernet Merlot from every year since 1991 and Primo Estate Shiraz from 1989 is added to a unique blend of museum vintages from the past 40 years. A tirage is completed only every 18-24 months, ensuring the base wine retains it's unique character derived from the aged wines in the blend.

After traditional fermentation in the bottle, the JOSEPH Sparkling Red disgorgement is rested on yeast lees for 18 months before hand disgorgement. It was liqueured carefully with a blend of aged Australian fortified wines to ensure a savoury style with perfect balance. Varietal - Shiraz, Cabernet & Fortified Blend Region - Multi-regional

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Dark, omniscient black fruits with christmas spices and grilled nuts.

  • Primo Estate's story began in 1953 with the arrival of Primo Grilli. A grape grower in his home region of Le March in Italy, he emigrated to Australia bringing his skills to Virginia, a small township north of Adelaide. Primo Grilli's son, Joseph, having graduated Dux of his class at Roseworthy College in 1979, founded Primo Estate. An innovator from the start, Joe experimented with techniques such as double pruning, Amarone style grape drying and botrytis. Primo Estate quickly established a reputation for truly unique winemaking operations, combining modern Australian know-how with old-school Italian winemaking heritage. The Grilli family winery has come a long way since that first planting in Virginia, with Joe and Dina planting their dream vineyards in Clarendon and McLaren Vale. In 2006 Primo Estate opened the stunning new headquarters at McLaren Vale incorporating a cellar door and tasting room which combine modern design with classic Italian practicality to reflect the multicultural influences of the wines and even olive oils.

MIKE BENNIE - THE WINE FRONT

Of course one of the standard bearers for sparkling red in Australia. Combines mature and younger wines to create the whole, with many parcels (up to and including 40-year-old wines) added together to build the sparkling red. This is one of the freshest, crunchiest and yet more complex releases I have seen. Having recently tasted other halcyon examples, this creams them.Pulses of dark berry, ground nuts, clove, raspberry liquorice. The bouquet is a sweet fog of ripeness, decadent Xmas pudding and floral characters, with that prickle that comes from vigorous bubbles. While on bubbles, they're vigorous, crisp, but don't teeter into foamy, instead give this uplifting vibe to the sweetish-spicy fruit flavours that roll through the palate. It's quite powerful in its way too, lots of concentration, but feels bound up, drawn long, medium weight, near on elegant if it wasn't for the flirty, vivacious nature of the wine. So much going on and so delicious.'
