  • Who let the dog's out? 

    The big dogs have been unleashed, and not just at the local neighbourhood dog park, but out in to the streets, free to roam wherever they may choose.

    This is it - the case for all big dogs. The kind of wines that have a bit of guts, a bit of body and still taste like their in balance. It is a ripper case of wine, at a ripper price, and we are really excited to get this one off the leash. They are all high scoring too, with some pretty special praise coming from the likes of James Halliday, Ray Jordan, Wine Front and Huon Hooke.

  • TASTING NOTES 

    2014 Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon                         

    Appearance -
    Deep maroon with a bright ruby red hue.

    Nose - The nose heralds a pure, refreshing and sophisticated wine. Elevated regional fragrance of cassis, licorice, bay leaf and violets with savoury mushroom, loamy earth, dark chocolate and dry twiggy details combining to form an alluring Cabernet bouquet.

    Palate - The palate is compact and concentrated in flavour but well resolved in structure with a stunning silky texture at such a young age. There is a seemingly bottomless depth of blue and purple berries, nuances of herb and licorice, cedar and light wood smoke, with a gentle mouth-coating tannin persisting.

    2015 Epsilon Barossa Valley Shiraz                           

    The 2015 Shiraz has a strong , deep purple, attractive hue.

    Extremely aromatic and inviting with flavours of dark plum, black cherry hints of mocha and vanilla . This is one juicy and fruit driven wine that is just a absolute beauty. The clever use of french and American oak give a mouthfeel of fine grained tannins and a long, persistent finish.


    2012 John Duval Plexus SGM                                      

    Colour: Crimson purple red.
    Nose: An array of red and black berry aromatics, wild berries and cassis.
    Palate: Generous, with soft texture and fine tannins. Flavours of blackberry and dark cherry with hints of asian spice and Christmas cake.


    2015 Handpicked Collection Pinot Noir   

    This Tasmania Pinot Noir is a juicy wine that shows primary fruit flavours of raspberry, cherry and strawberry. The fruit concentration is balanced by fleshy, chalky, long tannins. A combination of fruit from three vineyards in the Tamar Valley and one in the Pipers River area, it is a true expression of Tasmanian Pinot Noir.
                       


    2012 Wolf Blass Gold Label Malbec           
                     

    Vibrant purple in colour. The nose has complex layers of wild cherry and plum interspersed with lifted regional herbal notes, warm nutmeg spices and fragrant oak.
    On the palate there is a bright, fresh, medium to full-bodied wine with fleshy, concentrated fruit flavours of plums and dark fruits. Well structured, with textural, chewy tannins and gentle oak influence, this delicious, spicy mouthful of fruit lingers on the palate with a soft, tightly structured finish.

    2013 Lindemans Bin 1300 Ben Ean Reserve Shiraz                   

    Flavours of dark cherry, red licorice and chocolate framed by savoury tannins.


    WINEMAKING NOTES

    2014 Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon      

    Vintage - Another text-book vintage in Margaret River with consistent, almost rhythmic temperature patterns throughout the ripening season, resulting in excellent balance and physiological ripeness of fruit. Reasonable yields were obtained despite a handful of blocks being exposed to heavy storms in Spring reducing their cropping potential, but overall quality is excellent.

    Winemaking - Cabernet parcels grown in the coastal, northern reaches of Margaret River on ancient, well drained gravel loam soils produce wines of great varietal purity and character. These wonderful, often tiny, vineyard sections are individually fermented using indigenous yeasts, with many experiencing maceration periods of up to 30 days. Natural fermentation and extended maceration are coupled with traditional oxidative handling to clearly define the intricate personality of each vineyard site before blending. Malbec complements and enhances the Cabernet profile.

    Cellaring Potential - Medium to long term.

    Varieties - 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec, 1% Petit Verdot, 1% Merlot.

    Alc/vol - 14.5%                  


    2015 Epsilon Barossa Valley Shiraz       

    The grapes for the epsilon Shiraz are estate grown, made and matured on the 20 acre site which is situated on the western side of the Barossa Valley in the famed sub region of Greenock. Three pickings are done throughout the vintage period over a time period of around 6 weeks. This gives us much more variety when it comes to blending the wines for producing the best possible Shiraz for each year. Typically our wines are very similar each year due to the fact we are in total control of the management of the site from pruning to when the wine goes into bottle. Only Mother Nature has the ability to change the wine characteristics and although some years have been a challenge we have been able to produce great valued wines year in year out.

    Winemaking is carried out by ourselves, in a traditional minimalistic way. The grapes are destemed not crushed then fermented for 7 to 11 days. During this time the ferment is pumped over 2 - 3 times a day & kept at a temperature of 22-25 degrees to ensure that maximum flavour and complexity are extracted from the fruit. The wines are matured in new and seasoned French and American oak for 12 - 24 months.

                     

    2012 John Duval Plexus SGM                     

    Variety & Vineyard - Shiraz 51%, Grenache 30%, Mourvedre 19%. The Shiraz was sourced from old vineyards in the Tanunda,  Light Pass and Ebenezer districts.  Grenache from the Tanunda and  Ebenezer region and Mourvèdre from the and Light Pass region.

    Winemaking - Fermentation with submerged cap and small open stainless  steel fermenters. 100% barrel maturated for 15 months, with just 10% new fine  grain French oak hogsheads (300 litre barrels); with the balance 3-6  year old barrels.  Some Shiraz finished fermentation in new French  oak.

    2015 Handpicked Collection Pinot Noir       

    The pristine environment and relative isolation of Tasmania protect the island from biosecurity threats and guard its status as a genuinely clean and unspoiled region. These billy button flowers represent the natural beauty of the island and their bright colour symbolises the exuberance of this delightfully lifted and aromatic wine. A true cool-climate wine region, Tasmania has established a reputation for production of ultra premium Pinot Noir and sparkling wines. Mild spring and summer temperatures followed by warm autumn days and cool nights produce a long season in which grapes ripen slowly, encouraging maximum flavour development. Maritime winds from all directions help moderate conditions year round.

    Lower-than-average rainfall and a warm summer led to good yields with excellent flavour. The fruit for this wine came from four vineyards – three on both sides of the Tamar River and one in Pipers Brook. Parcels were selected and blended based on aromatics and balance. All grapes were hand harvested and then hand plunged in small open fermenters. The wine was matured in French oak, 33% new, for 11 months.                 


    2012 Wolf Blass Gold Label Malbec                           

    Vineyard Notes:  Langhorne Creek is perfectly suited to growing delicious, spicy, intensely flavoured Malbec. Renowned for its deep, rich alluvial soils, the region produces fine, soft wines of great richness and enormous depth of character.

    Vintage Conditions: The combination of good winter rainfalls, low crop levels and mild conditions during ripening has resulted in exceptional quality. Bright, varietal fruit characters, great intensity of colour and flavour and excellent natural acidity are the hallmarks of 2012, which will go down as one of the great vintages of the decade.

    Winemaker Notes: Fermentation on skins for 7 to 10 days allowed for optimum release of colour and flavour while extracting fine, elegant tannins. 18 months maturation in seasoned and new French oak has enhanced structure and complexity.



    2013 Lindemans Ben Ean Reserve Shiraz       

    Lindeman's Hunter Valley Reserve Shiraz is sourced from our Ben Ean vineyard in Pokolbin and has great depth and complexity.            


  • 2014 Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon     

    'Cabernet, like Chardonnay, has been a particular focus for Vasse Felix. This is a special wine from a special vintage. Elegance and refinement personified. Leafy floral notes on the nose. But it is the palate that really sings. It’s relatively tight with a core of fine oak and firmish silky tannins, but there is sweet fleshy fruit held with focus that extends effortlessly to a long finish.'

    2015 Epsilon Barossa Valley Shiraz

    'An alluring shiraz that tiptoes an elegant aromatic line of lilac, violet, iodine and sapid blueberry notes, laced with star anise and clove. The palate, too, does not disappoint. Fine-grained, slinky tannins and saline acidity serve as a confluence to the free-flowing fruit and expanding, more savoury, tones of smoked meats, black olive and liquorice root. Northern Rhone? A wine of a deft hand and fresh fruit picked at the optimal window of opportunity. Bravo!'

    'John Duval was for many years the chief winemaker at Penfolds, crafting Grange, Bin 707 and other Australian wine icons. These days he has his own label and sources fruit from old vineyards in and around the Barossa Valley. This was the wine with which he kicked off his new enterprise a decade ago, a Rhone - style blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre. And boy is this new release a cracker. From one of the best vintage in living memory, it has both power and elegance and is approachable now while being cellar worthy. Fifteen months in French oak have added structure and texture to the blackberry and spice notes and the end results taste like a wine that should command at least twice the price.'

    'Bin 1300. An elegant and focused shiraz, with a fragrant bouquet ranging through black cherry, spice and a touch of sweet leather; the tannins are high quality, fine, but persistent. It's great to see the remnants of the Ben Ean Vineyard performing so well. This will run and run, the drink-to date conservative.'
