2012 Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard Brooks Road Shiraz Museum Release
The Collective Review
Hickinbotham (Clarendon Vineyard) is a new ultra-premium, small batch range produced by Jackson Family Wines (who also own Yangarra). The historic Clarendon vineyard was planted by Alan Hickinbotham in 1971, and quickly established itself as truly unique site, going on to become the source of premium fruit for many illustrious brands over the years, including Clarendon Australis (ongoing), Penfolds Grange and Eileen Hardy. This is the most finely-structured and elegant of the three vintages of Hickinbotham Vineyard Shiraz. It's another step in our determined effort to get the best from this distinguished upland site. Each of the three Shiraz vintages is a little further from the traditional high-alcohol, full-bodied McLaren Vale Shiraz from the lower, warmer country in the south of the region.
Deep, dark, youthful red/purple colour, the bouquet showing some char-oak and rich sooty, smoky plum fruit. The black fruit aromas emerged the longer it aired in the glass. It's rich, full-bodied and smooth, with density and textural grip. The palate is intense, full-blooded, bright and assertive, with tremendous length and finish. A seriously good shiraz. Read more

Vineyard planted in 1971, and I believe, once a source of fruit to many a very premium wine. Blackberry, dried mint, toast and tar – brooding while wearing perfume. Full bodied, slick of ripe fleshy tannin, dark chocolate and plum with acidity just shy of being too pushy. Brown toast and blackberry on the finish. Deep, rolling wine with plenty of substance, through it’s not over-wrought. Feels like it’s built for the future.

Tasting Notes
APPEARANCE: Bright earthiness of the red beet clusters. AROMA: Scents of dark currants and red berries. PALATE: Harmonious and smooth, despite its wide scope of aromas and flavours, which range from Morello cherries, through faint bergamot, to creamy orange chocolate with soft velvet tannins. While it's assured to offer profound delight as it mellows and matures, it's a silky treat already.
