The Collective Review
Husband and wife duo Mike and Colleen, owners of Merite Wines, have loved the wines of Argentina for over 15 years. They went so far as to take a four-month sojourn to Argentina to learn the art of crafting robust and lively wines from the country's flagship grape, Malbec.
Since then, they have been perfecting their craft and aimed to create a wine inspired by the greatest Malbec in the world. And that's what we have here, a wine that rings true as bold, juicy Malbec with a touch of Australian flair.
Perhaps the most exciting rendition of the grape we are yet to see in Australia, this is an inky, dark-fruited and intense wine sure to put hairs on your chest. For a little something outside the usual Shiraz/ Cab trope, look no further.
Fine domestic malbec of boysenberry, violet and minty scents, sophisticated in its swathe of moreish, middle-weight tannins and the integration of oak, again, a United Nations of origins (30% new). Vanilla, cedar and bitter chocolate find a welcome companion in malbec's generous girth. The tannins are this estate's calling card: finely tuned and on just the right side of grit. Read more

Planted in 2008 from some new clones from Argentina. Seems to be available only in a mixed case, so assuming not a lot of it made. Blackberry, floral and vanilla perfume, some dark mint chocolate too. Medium-bodied, good feel to the wine here with a fine grainy spread of tannin, some mouth-perfume in with dark juicy fresh berries, nice and bright on a pretty long finish. Thoroughly charming. Watch this space, I’d say.
Elegant, intense, spicy, not necessarily typical of Malbec. Very nice fruit, lovely and well integrated tannin, well balanced, fresh, clean.

Tasting Notes
Merite have planted Argentinian clones of malbec that are new to Australia. Cool-climate shiraz from the Limestone Coast is so versatile as it suits a variety of dishes from all seasons. Together they complement each other in this shiraz malbec wine as the malbec adds floral aromatics and a meatiness to the red fruits, aniseed and spice of the cool-climate shiraz. A real entertainer's wine!
Winemakers Note
Almost fifteen years ago, vignerons Colleen and Mike spent four months in Argentina to taste and learn everything they could about growing and making Argentine Malbec. Later, when Argentine clones of Malbec became available in Australia they seized the opportunity to plant an experimental parcel of four clones on their site in 2008 - seeing synergies between their cool climate site and some of the high altitude estates around Mendoza.
Argentine clones can produce smaller berries, creating wine that is more intense in colour and flavours. On our site, our soils and climate coax these newer clones to create Malbec that is inky, with intense fruitiness and aromatic qualities, and the excellent natural acidity and fine tannins that will reward cellaring.
We're really excited to be able to share an inky, vibrant, delicious Australian cool climate expression of Argentine Malbec with you.
