The Collective Review

When the world's most prestigious wine show describes our Rhone Red as 'dangerously drinkable' and 'impressive,' it commands attention. This classic blend, hailing from one of the foremost wine regions globally, is not only impeccably priced but also heralds from Cave de Cairanne, a Rhone-based cooperative. This collective consists of over 100 local growers and winemakers, dedicated to entirely sustainable farming. Each member has transitioned to organic practices, cultivating the land exclusively by hand.

What sets this Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre blend apart are the vivid notes of Black Forest cherries, dark plum, and cocoa bean that burst forth from the glass. It offers a rich, rounded, and full-bodied experience, emblematic of a quintessential Southern Rhone red, with undertones of peppercorns, cinnamon, walnut, and liquorice adding to its allure.

Our quest to find a French red that would resonate with the refined palates accustomed to Barossa & McLaren Vale Shiraz has led us to this wine. With its exceptional craftsmanship, commitment to organic practices, and competitive pricing, it stands out as a noteworthy contender. However, be advised that our locally imported stock is exceedingly limited, making this a sought-after selection.

The Wine Collective - Tasting Panel

Seductive aromas of Christmas cake, dark fruit, blackcurrant and a bit of heat on the nose. The palate is rich and powerful. Real penetration and a linear drive, but everything is very well-balanced and rounded.

Winemakers Note

Nestled in the warm embrace of the Mediterranean climate, the vineyard from which this wine originates spans an altitude of 98 to 339 meters, rooted deeply in stony limestone clay slopes. This exceptional terroir gives rise to a distinguished blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 20% Mourvèdre. The winemaking process begins with a meticulous 48-hour pre-ferment cold maceration, followed by traditional fermentation in concrete vats at temperatures ranging from 16° to 27°C. Daily winemaking techniques, including délestage, remontage, or pigeage, are tailored across six weeks based on the intuitive assessment by the local co-operative winemaker, who eschews the use of SO2 during the vinification process. The wine matures gracefully in concrete for ten months, with a modest addition of sulphites at the time of bottling to preserve its integrity.

The vineyard, a sanctuary of organic viticulture, is hand-harvested and sits just north of Cairanne. It faces the picturesque Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont Ventoux, offering a stunning backdrop to the vines. The terrain is characterized by stony clay-limestone hillsides on gentle slopes, which receive abundant sunlight. Erosion has sculpted the landscape, revealing a unique composition of limestone gravel interspersed with rare flint and marl, contributing to the distinctive character and complexity of the wine. This harmonious interaction between climate, soil, and skilled winemaking crafts a narrative of dedication and passion, encapsulated in every bottle.
