The Collective Review

Remember the 2018 Mystery Adelaide Hills Chardy or the follow up, the 2019 edition from the very same ‘famous’ big-name Hills producer? We sure as heck do. Between the two vintages, they were awarded nearly twenty Gold medals domestically and internationally, ranging from the Australian Wine Showcase, all the way to celebrated events in Tokyo and New York.

Wines like that don’t hang around too long…The good news? They come back the next year with a brand new vintage. So, here we go - the famous Mystery Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2020 edition!

And yes, it lives up to its predecessor. 6 Gold medals. 97 points. 96 points. 95 points. Halliday points. Wine show points. All of the points.

Straight off the bat it comes from a Halliday Wine Companion 5-red star rated winery, an honour only awarded to the most outstanding producers. They’re family owned and operated and are the largest Certified Sustainable Winery in the Adelaide Hills. If that’s not an indication of commitment and quality we don’t know what is!

The fruit for this top-shelf white is handpicked from the eponymous low-yielding vineyard and then sees ten months of French Oak (30%). After maturation the barrels are tasted and tested - only the very best go on to bear the hallmark name… It is this uncompromising pursuit of quality that has resulted in such an exceptional, and now world-renowned wine.

Intense nose of nectarine, lemon curd , lemongrass and light vanilla sugar. The palate is impressively savoury and concentrated, with saline lines of limes, lemon butter and white nectarine. Very classy, really direct, pinpoint wine with terrific concentration and energy. Great wine!

(This winery) consistently craft some of the best value Chardonnay in Adelaide Hills. This wine shows precise cool climate fruit and as always exceptional winemaking. The nose has worked fig and almond-meal with flint like spice to stone fruits. There is an understated lemon pith and green apple thread to the palate that is contrasted by vanillin spice and fresh nougat. I really like the tension to the wine, which is more chablis like if you were going to pin it to an old world style. The length is long to finish and has austere stone fruits and citrus set against winemaker induced richness.

Jeni Port - Halliday's Wine Companion

Pressed to French oak for wild ferment and 10 months' maturation. Makes an immediate creamy, buttery, complex impression with summery stone-fruit intensity, biscuit spice, nougat and citrus. The oak is well integrated, providing a background hum and vanillin creaminess. Plenty of flavour right here, and the price makes it a steal.

Lovely gold in the glass, tropical fruits with pineapple on the nose, on the palate, the wine is creamy with a continuation of tropical fruits and citrus. Delicious

Tasting Notes

With aromas of white peach, pink grapefruit, Meyer lemon aromas leading to delightful flavours of grilled almonds, lychee and finger lime, all punctuated by a slaty, mineral-driven acidity. The wine is tight and racy with fine Oak tannins to support this powerfully structured Chardonnay.

Winemakers Note

Hand-picked from low yielding Dijon clones Bernard B95 and B76 at our Mappinga Road vineyard. Grapes were chilled in our cool rooms for 24 hours. Partially whole-bunch pressed, then wild-yeast fermented in 100% French oak, 30% new in larger 300 and 500 litre barrels for ten months.
