The Collective Review

Buckle up, this bottle is your portal to an alternate reality of McLaren Vale Grenache.

In fact, it’s so transportive that we have to keep a few details secret from you until it arrives at your door…

The grapes for this Grenache come from a single biodynamically run vineyard perched atop an ancient ridge overlooking McLaren Vale, the Willunga escarpment and the Gulf St Vincent. The vineyard is named after the native bird of prey that soars over the vines, scaring off other birds and rabbits, and helping itself to ripening grapes.

It’s a wine that’s handpicked, handcrafted and handmade, and you can taste the quality and care. Grab your biggest, most rounded glass for this for the full experience. On first pour, its colour is purple-vermillion, with a translucency to rival Pinot Noir. Enjoy earthy aromas with plenty of perfume - classic MV musk and nosegay - that lead to mulberries, quince and meatiness from the oak.

Next, sip & savour. There’s depth and texture here, with a subtle savouriness and biting acid. The tannins are gruff but inoffensive. You’ll find lots of juicy primary berry fruit flavours, and a constant soft hum of old oak in the background. You’ll be able to cellar a few bottles of this, too.

Oh, and did we mention the accolades? 98 points and Runner-up Double Gold in the Global Fine Wine Challenge, 96 points and a Double Gold in the Melbourne Fine Wine Show, 95 points and a Gold from Huon Hooke at The Real Review, 91 points from Kasia Sobiesiak at The Wine Front… and more.

Trust us when we say you know the name of the person who made this wine. She’s a renowned (and highly acclaimed!) winemaker and certified genius when it comes to creating sensational vinous pleasures.

Gabrielle Poy - The Real Review

A captivating nose of dark ripe red berries, 'forest floor' and spice makes you stop and keep on smelling. The palate echoes the nose—a bewildering mix of chocolate-coated raspberries, moss and roses glides across the palate, the tannins are fine and silky. This is complex yet inviting, a thrilling grenache.

Tasting Notes

Colour Purple-vermillion; clear rim edge; a translucency reminiscent of pinot noir. Nose Earthy and yet also quite perfumed; classic McLaren Vale grenache musk and nosegay. Meaty, blackberried, mulberried, quince-pasted, and then a slice of pastrami, courtesy of the subtle oak. The aromatics and bouquet bounce off each other as the wine spends more time in the glass. (And please use a big, rounded one, as you would for pinot noir…) Palate Depth and texture offset by a subtle savouriness and linear acidity. Gentle tannic gruffness is the essential third player in this naturally composed triptych. The background spice and roundness of mostly older oak just, just, sings out, but entirely in tune with those primary berry fruit flavours. A red wine that grows in the glass, with air. Drink Wet-roasted goat or young lamb, cooked with too many root vegetables and a touch of red wine vinegar. Or, in warmer months, a homemade terrine, properly fatty, under the shade of a midday tree.

Winemakers Note

Selected bunches were hand picked by family and friends in early March. We gently crushed half of the fruit over whole bunches into open topfermenters. After 10 days of fermentation the wine was basket pressed into French oak barrels, a third new and the balance seasoned. This was followed by 18 months maturation with minimal winemaking artefact before bottling, to capture the essence of the vineyard. The wine will reward cellaring and decanting
