The Collective Review

Here we stand, in the shadows of Giants, in awe of this world renowned estate and the seemingly miraculous wines they produce. With their recent acquisition by one of the world’s preeminent high end winemakers, Giant Steps’ rise to greatness has been complete.

Jackson Family Wines has some BIG names in their portfolio, and this Yarra Valley beauty is another jewel in their crown. Their Pinot Noir & Chardonnay have become world class, topping Wine Enthusiast’s Wine of the Year poll recently.

Ever since the internet-stopping, shout-it-from-the rooftops offer on the Giant Steps LDR, or the Giant Steps Otago Pinot, we've been wondering when the next big deal from the team would come. And we know you've been wondering too!

This 2021 Known Pleasures Syrah is made exclusively for us at The Wine Collective. That’s right - you won’t find this stunning, top shelf Yarra wine anywhere else. We’ve been waiting since 2021 to finalise this project, and it’s finally here.

Whenever we’ve run offers on Giant Steps in the past, they fly off the shelves and out the door. Needless to say, there are always disappointed customers. Don’t be the one with egg on your face this time - grab this deal before it’s gone.

It's always a treat to see the words 'Syrah' used on a label, instead of the more universal 'Shiraz' found in most other corners of Australia. Using 'Syrah' is like a little calling card the winemaker left behind to help tell the story of what's to come in the bottle. Wow. This is evocative! So fragrant and detailed, with dark plums, black cherry essence, sarsaparilla and oriental spice. A genuinely beguiling and inviting nose that speaks one part super-serious, and one part, light-dry-red and smashable. Giant Steps have a knack for nailing the little details in their wines, and fine tannins and whisper-thin lashings of oak give this wine a genuinely refreshing finish. Very crafty winemaking here, with great balance at play. A cool breeze of acidity brushes past, feathering down the svelte tannins and hints of amaro-like bitters. This is a smart, accessible and dangerously drinkable red wine that will benefit with some further time in the bottle (although it's hard to keep yourself from going back for more). Drink now and for another 5-8 years. Read more

Tasting Notes

Vibrant and bright berries in the glass. A nose of Red currant, cherries and strawberries. Palate has juicy bright fruit with a dash of red licorice to give a little spice. It is a light bright and fruity red from one of the best producers in the Yarra Valley. Another great exclusive wine for TWC customers.

Winemakers Note

2021 began as a challenging vintage in the Yarra Valley due to summer and autumn rains and cooler than average temperatures during the growing season. However this then led to a long slow ripening period which produced thicker skins, riper stems and more concentrated flavours, resulting in great quality Syrah. Sourced from the Sexton and Tarraford Vineyards, The Syrah is fermented in small open vats with varying degrees of whole bunch and whole berry fermentation. Maturation in French Oak for 18 Months. 10% New, 90% Seasoned.
