The Collective Review

This may be the best-value Burgundy we've ever found. If you thought it was impossible to find high quality for under $20 well then think again. The wine comes from a plot to the North of Macon, that lies on clay-limestone soils. These soils allow for a more decadent and opulent style of Burgundy, while a cool-ferment preserves freshness and fruit aromas. The result is a perfect balance between richness and texture with ripe fruit and white flowers. Not to mention it has signature Burgundian freshness and elegance.

Home to the great villages of Saint-Veran and Pouilly-Fuisse, the Macon is where the future of modern Burgundy lies. Naudin Varrault is the brainchild of one of Burgundy's most revered Cremant (sparkling) winemakers. They have a raft of mineral-driven, chalk and limestone infused Chardonnay vineyards to call upon.

Made from handpicked grapes and sourced from old vines, this white was made with just a little new oak but emphasises the famous nutty sunny volume that Macon is famous for.

The last vintage of this Chardonnay was a revelation, described by fellow members of the Collective as a 'Burgundy beauty' with one person noting that it was 'so hard to find a white burgundy that doesn't cost an arm and a leg - this one ticks all the boxes.'

Butter, vanilla, peach, nectarine, white blossom aromas. Palate is opulent, well-rounded and very buttery. There is a nice firm, rubberry texture around the edges providing good structure, and tames the spicier acid elements leading into the finish.

Wonderful gold color. A discreet nose, with delicate citrus notes. On the palate, freshness and flowers aromas express a very well balanced wine. Pair with Shellfish, Fish, chicken in sauce.
