The Collective Review

We are heading west of Sydney, over the Great Dividing Range, to the picturesque Mount Canobolas. With snow-capped peaks and a bracingly cool altitude, Orange, notably the adventurous Rowlee Estate, has found a fortunate home for the native Italian grape. They colloquially call Arneis the ‘little rascal’, yet winemakers and owners Nicole Samodol and James Manny have tamed the wild beast in this refreshing mountain air.

Their philosophy is grounded in obsessive attention to detail, with a hands-on approach in the vineyard and winery, suiting the fickle Arneis perfectly. They harvest by hand, whole-bunch press, then ferment in older French oak barrels. The result is an elegant and balanced example of Arneis, with powerful aromas and richness from the additional riper fruit.

Immediately, our Panel threw out scores we rarely see - 95 points from Head Sommelier Thomas Pajak and 94 points from Imports Manager Jeremy Grieve, combining to become a gold-medal, 95-point score usually reserved for only the very best wines. The critics are loving it too.

Trying something new can be a bit of a leap, but trust us, this investment in your wine journey will surely pay off. In a world filled with predictable, cookie-cutter wines, the 2022 Rowlee Arneis stands out like an enigma. Whether you chance it on one bottle or dive right into an entire case, isn’t it time we all embrace and explore the unexpected and unique?

This Rowlee Arneis is undoubtedly that.

This is delicate and restrained, showing crunchy apple, lemon zest, dried grass and Gala apple notes, followed by a linear palate offering vibrant mouthfeel with a lengthy mouth-watering finish.

The Piedmont white grape, Arneis, is certainly making itself right at home in Australia. It’s being planted in warm regions through to cool, and doing a mighty fine job of delivering some distinctive styles according to each individual terroir. In Orange, Rowlee has looked to the ripe and textural side of the grape. In fact, very ripe, coming in at 14.5% alc. The grape holds the ripeness and higher alcohol well, in part due to the cooler regional climate from where it is sourced and the scintillating acid profile that comes with that. The scents are summery and fresh in white peach, green apple, lime zest with an almond meal, macaroon touch of lees-fuelled depth. Flavours expand across a warm and textural palate – apple, stone fruit, lemon – with just a hint of fruit sweetness. Racy acidity rings in a wine that is both tasty, ripe fruited, textural and well balanced.

A perfumed example of the northern Italian variety. Young green almonds, white nectarine and star fruit with a rocky pumice-like stone quality. Fruity and refreshing with a nice slippery feel. A laid-back style of summer drinking with a touch of prickly heat.

Very powerful, zesty acid. Almost minty in its freshness and bite, without tasting minty. Floral aromas, mandarine. Really wakes you up.

Tasting Notes

Elegant and balanced with powerful aromas. An autumnal fruit bowl, with nashi pear, almond and ripe apple scents melding with jasmine, hay and orange blossom. Lively and juicy with a full and textured palate thanks to ageing on lees. Perfectly balanced with hints of lime and green apple. A refreshingly crisp finish. Ideal serving temperature 8-10°C Food pairings: Grilled Swordfish or Frittelle di Zucchine

Winemakers Note

Hand harvested on 31 March 2021. In the winery, the Arneis was gently whole bunch pressed. The lightly fined juice was racked to stainless steel with a portion racked to older French oak barriques for fermentation. The portion in tank was then fermented at cool temperatures to retain varietal character and freshness. The use of older oak and the extended aging on lees adds texture and complexity. The wine was then blended, lightly fined, filtered and bottled in November 2021.
