It all starts with the talented winemaking team and the quality of the Onkaparinga fruit. Daryl Catlin, formerly of Shaw & Smith, leads the show alongside Owen & Cassandra Inglis. They farm everything sustainably and craft the vineyards and winemaking entirely by hand, following the recipe you would expect in wines at much higher prices.
The 2021 Sidewood Estate Adelaide Hills Shiraz is a versatile crowd-pleaser that sets new benchmarks for those seeking high quality at an affordable price. It leans more toward the Syrah style than typical Aussie Shiraz, but it's all the better for it. Bursting with fragrance and spice, it offers notes of pepper, sage, blackberry, plum, and tree sap. A medium to deep red in colour with a faintly reductive nose of cured meats, plum and pepper. The palate has generosity and a svelte like texture that flows from start to finish. There is attractive plum fruit that is laden with meaty, spiced influences that as always is a nod to the wines of the Rhone Valley. The finish is long with great texture and impressive balance of fruit and savoury nuance.
A splendid rendition of the variety, showing Black Doris plum, blueberry, dried herb, tar and roasted nut aromas on the nose, leading to a beautifully weighted palate displaying supple texture backed by fine-grained tannins, finishing long and delectable. www.sidewood.com.au.
A rich wine with flavours of charcoal-grilled meats, nori and blueberry corseted with a well-judged tannic vein. Light, mind you, but mercifully palpable. The seemingly unavoidable eucalyptus wafts in and imparts a drying sensation, yet there is sufficient spiced whole-bunch complexity to mitigate it, to a degree. A contemporary Australian expression of shiraz with plenty of the sweet fruit of yesteryear.
