The Collective Review

Here’s an unsung hero of the Margaret River’s most elite names that deserves your attention.

Alongside the earliest forerunners of the region, Leeuwin Estate, Moss Wood, and Cullen, this winery's claim to fame is its longevity in a region that only ostensibly started producing wines in the 1970’s.

They’ve never been one to seek the limelight, or adulation, but for those in the know, this particular boutique establishment, offers up one of the region’s most formidable Chardonnay experiences. This, their flagship release, is a monumental wine. Intense, sun-drenched, layered with cashew, biscotti, white peach, lemon curd and grapefruit blossom, it’s a riveting take on the classic Marg’s style.

Previous releases have racked up some impressive gongs, including the WA winner for Halliday&rsquo's Chardonnay Challenge and a bevy of 97pt scores from Wine Companion. This 2022 edition, from a achingly pure vintage, where the conditions bordered on near-perfection, marks this as a Chardonnay to watch. 10 years in the cellar? Easy.

It has taken just half a century for Margaret River Chardonnay to take its place among the very finest examples of the grape to be found anywhere. Here is yet more evidence why. This superb example hails from two vineyards, including the team’s Wilyabrup vineyard. Whole bunch pressing in small bunches, wild yeasts, lees stirring and eight months maturation in French barrels, 30% new. Bright yellow hue, this offers a lovely expressive nose. Tropicals, banana, pineapple, passionfruit and cashewy oak. The oak is still integrating and this wine will look even better in a year or two. At the moment, very much early days. A fine line of acidity with good bite, balance and length, this is a wine which will provide great pleasure for at least four to six years, most likely more.

This has aromas of jasmine, lemons, fresh apricots and salted butter. Some cloves, too. It’s medium-bodied, with long, lively and creamy layers. I like the subtle spice. Tangy acidity throughout. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Wow, rich, opulent, full of delicious fruits, melon, peach. The palate is amazing, full bodied but still dancing and clean. So joyful. dances between old and new school like a pro. Love it

Tasting Notes

COLOUR Pale straw with a green tinge NOSE Fragrant white peach and citrus notes with pear and subtle nougat nuances. PALATE Medium-full bodied palate with flavours of stonefruit, zesty grapefruit and citrus blossom complemented by a creamy texture from lees influence. The fine, delicate acid line provides a mineral framework for the wine and allows the fruit flavours to linger through the long finish.

Winemakers Note

The 1000 crowns are the pinnacle of our wines. The wines are named in honor of the price our grandfather paid for the land over 100 years ago. This wine comes from two vineyards, including the Wilyabrup vineyard. Whole bunch pressing in small bunches, wild yeasts, lees stirring and eight months maturation in French barrels, 30% new.
