The Collective Review

From a block planted at 950m that is regularly draped in snow, this finely honed and beautifully detailed Pinot Noir feels like the breath of fresh air Orange Pinot Noir has been needing.

Think the high-toned raspberry and gently leafy aromatics that you'd more likely see in the chilly Macedon Ranges than central NSW, complemented by a palate that walks that tightrope between pretty fruit delicacy and more firm, drying power.

What a wine. What a statement, with this 12.4% alcohol red more like a slice of German Spatburgunder than some lush Yarra Pinot.

Indeed, this Mystery label feels like an essential reminder of how far Australian (and significantly, Orange) Pinot Noir has come.

Eye catching from the first glance of that iridescent, deep cherry pink colour. Brings an immediacy to the glass, fragrant and fresh. The power of the fruit stands tall. Cherry, cranberry, raspberry mix with attractive violet florals and cinnamon bark. Moves into second gear on the palate exploring tastes of the soil, earthiness and bracken mingling with the spice and cherry berry red fruits. A lick of vanillin oak makes its appearance and, with it, some nice warm and textural notes. All up, quite a stylish Pinot. The biggest red grape planted in the Orange region is Shiraz followed by Cabernet Sauvignon, but let’s also hear it for Pinot Noir. Read more

Tasting Notes

Mid to light ruby garnet with a light garnet hue. The aroma opens immediately with dark cherry and wild strawberry with a hint of currant leaf, graphite, and anise. The nose in abundant and varietal with background hints of plum and nutmeg. Soft and full on entry, with brooding dark cherry and a hint of cranberry adding depth of flavour. Full textured with firm but rounded tannins on supple acidity giving a long and structured finish. A hint of background oak offering support.

Winemakers Note

Handpicked and destemmed to leave whole berries, 5% whole bunch in 2-tonne open fermenters with hand plunging twice a day. 4 day cold soak before fermentation, approx. 10 day fermentation and pressing off when the cap starts to sink, approx. 5 days after fermentation is finished. Pressed then racked to barrel for Malolactic fermentation and maturation for 10 months before blend and bottling.
