The Collective Review

The Nietschke wines are made by the Kalleske family, tapping into their extensive western Barossan vineyards to craft real Barossan reds.

The 2022 vintage is already following in the footsteps of '21 as being another sublime Barossa year, with deeply complex wines and longevity. Blended with a splash of Durif (aka Petite Sirah) to add complexity, ‘Jack’ is a modern Shiraz with a twist.

It is bright and uplifting with intense perfumed aromatics. Dark cherry and violets burst forth, along with roast almond, chocolate and musk leading to an enticing offering. The palate is equally vivid, with soft luminous red and black fruits enveloping the entire mouth. It is seamless throughout, with mild tannins adding structure and restrained oak perfectly enhancing the rich fruit characters.

This full-bodied Barossan will cellar gracefully (if you can stand to wait!).

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Nietschke Jack Shiraz exhibits a striking deep purple hue. Its aromatic profile is abundant, featuring vibrant, ripe black fruits taking the lead, accompanied by notes of red liquorice, hints of cinnamon toast, and a subtle infusion of chocolaty oak. On the palate, it immediately reveals its richness and full-bodied character. It delivers a luscious blend of dark fruit flavors, skillfully balanced by a precise undercurrent of lively acidity, which imparts a sense of freshness. The tannins, while present, are gentle and seamlessly integrated, contributing to an elegant structure. The immaculate fruit notes are gracefully complemented by nuanced oak influences, culminating in a prolonged, satisfying finish. Nietschke Jack is a fine Barossa Shiraz that will cellar gracefully in the medium term.

Winemakers Note

The 2022 vintage was excellent. The 2022 yields were good, and the quality is great, a classic Barossa vintage displaying rich flavours with
fine balance.

Nietschke Jack is grown and made in Australia’s premier wine region, the Barossa Valley. Grapes are sourced from a diversity of sites across the Barossa, including the renowned Greenock sub-region where vines are low-yielding and are grown in shallow, sandy loam soil over deep red clay, providing ideal conditions for Shiraz.

The grapes were harvested in numerous batches from mid-March to mid-April. Following fermentation for 7 to 10 days on skins in open top fermenters with hand pump-overs twice daily, the grapes were pressed, and the wine was aged in hogshead barrels for eighteen months. Both seasoned and new American and French oak was used
